A partnership between Oswego County Workforce New York; The Manufacturers Association; and Cayuga Community College now offers a 72-hour course for women interested in entering the manufacturing field.
The “Women in Manufacturing” program began Sept. 16 at the Fulton campus of Cayuga Community College, 11 River Glen Drive, Fulton. Classes run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays until Dec. 11. The program is free and open to those aged 18 and older who are eligible to work in the U.S.
“This is a really exciting time for women to explore a new career path,” said Oswego County Workforce Development executive director Rachel Pierce. “Manufacturing is a major industry in the U.S. and the ‘Real Life Rosie’ program truly empowers women to become a part of it. It provides them with training and helps them develop a variety of skills that will open the door to future opportunities and enhance their career growth.”
Participants will learn a range of manufacturing processes including safety, CNC machining, hand tool usage, robotics and lean manufacturing. They will also visit local manufacturing sites, practice their interview skills and learn how to use LinkedIn.
Other benefits offered include the opportunity to “earn and learn.” Participants can receive up to $1,000 in stipends and incentives as they reach course milestones.
“We are also able to help those in the program with clothing, work supplies and, perhaps most importantly, transportation and child care,” said Pierce.
Upon completion of the course, students will receive up to two nationally recognized certifications – the Certified Manufacturing Associate and an Occupational Safety and Health Administration certification.
In addition, each person is guaranteed job interviews with up to six local manufacturing companies.
“We’re thrilled to partner with MACNY and Cayuga Community College to bring this program to Oswego County and help our residents become successful ‘Real Life Rosies,” Pierce added.
