Anyone looking for a hotel room in Oswego has about the same chance of winning the Powerball lottery. Rooms have been booked, some several months in advance, for the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8.
The total eclipse will be viewable throughout Oswego County with start and end times varying by location. Generally, it begins shortly after 2 p.m., with totality between 3:15 and 3:30 p.m. and concludes shortly after 4:30 p.m.
“Oh yeah, we certainly booked up,” the desk person at Best Western Plus and Clarion Hotel and Suites on East First Street said. “We have had people scheduling for more than a year for this stuff.”
“We are running out of room. We have roughly around 15 rooms left. Things change — quickly. For the seventh we have nothing available at all and then on the eighth there are about 15 rooms available – for now,” said the front desk person at Holiday Inn Express and Suites, 140 E. 13th St.
“We are completely booked and I have had people call all day. We have people cancel and other people have gotten those rooms; but we are booked,” said the guest service representative at Home2Suites 252 Route 104 East.
City events planned
The weekend of events in the Port City starts April 6 with Small Business Saturday. Many small businesses will be offering special sales and themed promotions geared towards the Total Solar Eclipse.
On Sunday, April 7, there will be a Downtown Eclipse Block Party on West First Street from 4 – 9 p.m.
On Monday, April 8, there will be an Eclipse Viewing Area at Breitbeck Park from 1 – 6 p.m.
“We will have several first responder drones in the air on April 8 to carefully monitor traffic patterns and respond to any situations that may develop on our roadways,” said Oswego County Unmanned Aircraft Systems Coordinator John McGraw. “These drones put us in a better position to help in other ways as well, such as in the event of a lost person or child.”
All recreational and commercial drone pilots are encouraged to check with the Federal Aviation Administration for any posted Temporary Flight Restrictions or Notices to Air Missions that may be on file for the area where they are looking to fly. Find them online at https://www.faa.gov/uas
